A History of Achievement

Forbes Magazine called the Washington Redskins the fifth most valuable franchise in the NFL, and it’s not hard to see why. Across their 88 seasons including the upcoming 2019 race, Washington has broken records, made amazing comebacks, and represents our country’s capital with pride. Not only has The Redskins become one of only a few teams that have recorded over 600 regular season and postseason wins, but they were also the first NFL franchise with an official marching band and fight song. The team has won five NFL championships, including three Super Bowls, and have earned fourteen divisional titles and six conference championships.

But this record of high marks and achievement began in 1932 when the team was known as the Boston Braves, where they changed their name to the Redskins, the following year. The team relocated to their current home of Washington D.C. in 1937 where they won their first NFL championship, a feat they would repeat in 1942. The team also earned fame for winning Super Bowls XVII, XXII, and XXVI. Even when the team isn’t on top, they still have a history of high-performance, including becoming league runner up in 1936, 1940, 1943, and 1945 as well as Super Bowls VII and XVIII. There are only six teams that have won more Super Bowls then them and only two teams that match their level of excellence.

It’s this commitment to the sport and this record of achievement that has serious Washington Redskins fans singing “Hail to the Redskins” every year. If you love American Football, how can you turn down the chance to see what may be history in the making?

About Washington Redskins

You might be wondering why the 2019 Washington Redskins season is worth your time. All you have to do is look at the all-star lineup that the team has gathered both on and off the field to find out why.

Everyone knows that no team is complete without their head coach steering the ship, and that’s what Jay Michael Gruden hopes to accomplish. Gruden is a former quarterback who has history and experience in American Football including his time in the Arena Football League where he won four Arenabowls as starting quarterback as well as recording two ArenaBowl wins as head coach. His on-field performance earned him honors as the league’s MVP in 1992. He played two seasons in the World League of American Football with Barcelona in ‘91 and Scotland in ‘95. He served three seasons with Phoenix in the NFL and Sacramento in the CFL on practice squads.

His honors and awards mark a 14-year career of high-performance including the ‘92 selection as Arena League MVP, a ‘95 honor as First Team All-Arena, Induction into the AFL Hall of Fame in ‘99, and ranking as fourth greatest AFL player in 2006. It’s easy to see why the franchise was excited to welcome Gruden to the helm of the Washington Redskins from 2014 to present.

But even the best coaches need strong talent to lead, and Gruden looks to have it in the 2019 season.

Their 1st round Draft Pick, Dwayne Haskins, looks ready to hit the ground running after throwing 50 touchdowns with only 8 interceptions in 2018 during his lone starting season as a sophomore at Ohio State. This achievement marks him as one of a handful of quarterbacks to ever pass 50 or more touchdowns in a single NCAA season earning him numerous Big Ten player awards and voting him MVP of the 2018 Big Ten Football Championship Game.

Montez Sweat also joined Washington as a 1st round pick where he’ll serve as an outside linebacker for the franchise. Many fans are looking at Montez eager to see what he’ll bring to the table after his 2019 NFL Combine performance where he set a record for a defensive lineman running the 40-yard dash at only 4.41 seconds. Many teams ignored this achievement since he was reportedly diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, but Washington traded back into the first-round draft to recruit him.

One last player to look out for is Derrius Guice returning from his performance in the 2018 season. Guice is noted as being the only player in Southeastern Conference history with three career games of 250 or more rushing yards. But what many fans are watching out for is the continuing story of Guice’s character, as he is noted as playing online games with his fans and raising over $21,000 in a week with a GoFundMe campaign to support cancer research.

The Washington Redskins have many other great players with incredible stories, but to find out more and see them in action, you’ll just have to order your tickets and visit FedExField.

Commanders Field

FedExField originally called Jack Kent Cooke Stadium is located near the Capital Beltway in PG County Maryland five miles east of Washington DC. The home of the Washington Redskins had the largest seating capacity of over 91,000 from 2004 until 2010, with a current capacity of 82,000. The stadium has five levels: a lower level, a club level, the lower and upper suite levels, and the upper level. Three of these levels, the Lower, Club, and Upper levels were named after important figures in Redskins, NFL, and Washington D.C. history, with the lower level named “George Preston Marshall Lower Level”, the club level named after Joe Gibbs, and the Upper level named after Pete Rozelle. After Snyder purchased the Franchise, he installed five rows of what he called “Dream Seats” in front of what had been the first rows of the lower level since the original first row seats were too short to allow fans to see over players on the sidelines.

FedExField is famous for playing host to the annual PG Classic College Football Game that is usually between historically black universities. It also plays host to other important college football games including the ‘98 game between Notre Dame and the United States Naval Academy, the 2004 Black Coaches Association Classic, and 112th Army-Navy Game.

It might surprise fans to know that FedEx Field also plays host to several international soccer matches for the United States and El Salvador. This includes the March 28, 2015 game where Argentina defeated El Salvador before nearly 54,000 fans, a June 7, 2014 doubleheader, and a quarterfinal doubleheader in the 1999 Women’s World Cup. This history of welcoming great Soccer matches has earned FedExField contention rights to serve as the 2026 FIFA World Cup venue, competing against 16 other venues for the rights.
